Trying To Do Better
Games Without Frontiers
Here is the digital Colophon for the Games Without Frontiers project — should you want a place to start on your own (more) inclusive printed or digital matter project.

Typography Considerations

Typeface

Using a typeface like this, one specifcily designed for legiblity & readabilty was a primary consideration. Atkinson Hyperlegible Next is a free grotesque sans-serif typeface, designed to be legible for readers who are partially visually impaired. Built thoughtfully with all characters as distinguishable from one another as possible. It was developed and designed by the Braille Institute of America with the help of Applied Design.

We used Atkinson Hyperlegible Next for this project.

Typography Considerations

Larger Is Easier To Read

Readers with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), early readers, low vision, as well as many dyslexic readers benefit from a greater than common type size.

We used 11pt size.

Typography Considerations

Avoiding Letter Crowding

Some dyslexic readers have struggles with letter crowding, so giving the individual characters a little breathing room could help some of those readers, without empacting readabilty & legibitiy for others.

We used Tracking set to 30.

Typography Considerations

Avoiding Line Crowding

Many different reading types have difficulty when the line-height is to close. Giving those lines a bit more space could help some of those readers, without empacting readabilty & legibitiy for others.

We used Line-Height (aka Leading) set to 150%.

Contrast Considerations

Contrast Is Key

Generally using PURE BLACK for type can cause some propblems for many readers. You want a good contrast, but not a completely extreme one.

Many different types of readers can stuggle with a PURE BRIGHT WHITE backgrounds. Choosing something that is slightly grey, or slightly warm grey, will make the experience better for most.

For the type we used #58585b, or R88 G89 B91.

Our background color is #EBEEED, or R235 G238 B257 .

Layout Considerations

Return Sweeps

By using a more narrow coulumn width for this work we are helping those who have AMD & dyslexia. Usually somewhere between 40-65 character width is optimum for reading. Additionally making sure that the text is aligned left & ragged right will also guide attention and aid in what line is next to be read.

Text Aligned LEFT and a 47 character column width.

Layout Considerations

Thumb Margins To Hold

Really wanted it to be easy to hold the printer matter, and not have to adjust your hand because you were obsctucting the text. I was thinking about usabilty that can be brought to the printed piece simply by not needing to adjust your hand over and over as you read the page. Hold it once, comfortably, and read on!

Margins are Top, Inside, Outside at 0.875 inch, and the Bottom was 1.000 inch

Layout Considerations

ZINE Ethos

The print version was deisgned in the traditional Zine format useing 8 1/2 x 11 inchs, folded in half. That way you could print it at home, or Kinkos, or from your work comptuer and simply bind them together with a rubberband for every book. No fancy binders or staplers needed.

Layout Considerations

Designed for Print or Digital

The deisgn was intened to be eqally lovely and considered, in both digital and in print. Speficicallly so there is not a lot to be lost in one format over the other.
